Philosophy Professor, Will Dudley ’89, has been the featured speaker on this swing and our venue in Milwaukee was the home of Todd and Liz Krieg (both ’83 and parents to KK ’08, Gretchen ’10 and incoming First Year, Sam ’13). Todd serves as the local Regional Association President and 30 members of the Williams family were treated to a fantastic dinner and entertaining talk by Will.
Among those in attendance were three generations of the White family- two are in the picture below- can you spot the 3rd?
Jean White, Julie White ’99, Nat White ’99 and, Sam White ‘65
Nat serves as Class Secretary for ’99 and was awarded the Thurston Bowl recognizing outstanding service in this role at his 10th reunion in June. Nat has also taken up speed skating- and not just recreationally, as he has aspirations to make the Olympic Trials later this year- best of luck, Nat!
Throughout July and August every year, the Alumni Relations works with 20-25 regional associations planning “Send-Off” Parties for members of the incoming class of First Years around the country. Four incoming students from WI were with us, Andrew Langston ‘13, CeCe Guilfus ‘11, Charlie Sellars ‘13, Sam Krieg ‘13.
Conversation at the Kelsh home in Chicago kept us up until 1am on Monday night and before we knew it the midnight hour had rung as we enjoyed the company of Todd, Liz and Sam.
Other thoughts and memories from the past three days:
Spending quality time with Kris Kelsh ’90 and Cassandra Taliaferro Hiland ’90 in Evanston, IL- serving as their JA in Williams F in 1986 didn’t seem so long ago as they look exactly the same.
Exploring the Northwestern campus while on a run and thinking, “I hope they know how lucky they are to have Morty.” What a wonderful new home at Northwestern and in Evanston for the Schapiros. We couldn’t catch up with Morty as he was abroad on NW business.
A refreshing post-run swim in Lake Michigan- only slightly warmer than New England Atlantic beaches.
Teaching the young alumni Expedition leaders and a Kelsh daughter how to play Wales Tails (G rated version- no drinking involved).
The Expedition Leaders returning the favor the next night with a Beirut tutorial (less G rated). Young guns have nothing on folks from ’88 and ’89.
Getting to really know Will Dudley ’89 and watch him in action. A remarkable person and speaker with an understanding of Williams and Higher Ed, rivaled by few.
The Miller Brewery Tour (when in Rome) and learning a good deal about Frederick Miller, the history of brewing, and a first class tutorial on mass marketing and advertising in America.
Catching up with Freshman roommate, Bill Emptage ’88, in Minneapolis.
The overwhelming generosity of the Williams family.
Lastly, a few words of thanks for our Expedition leaders- Jason Kohn ’08, Jen Bees ’08, Rachel Ko ’09 and Emily Flynn ’09.
Will Dudley ’89 and I were able to jet into Chicago on Monday and are on our way back home to our families on Thursday. Our intrepid leaders have been going for 9 days with 2+ weeks to go. Their interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity and sense of adventure are strong and we a grateful for the commitment they are making to this initiative and to Williams. Keep up the great work, Team, and thanks for letting Will and I tag along on your journey for a few days.
